About John Millikin

 

My background:  

 

 

I earned a PhD from Virginia Tech's Marriage and Family Therapy program in Blacksburg, a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Appalachian State University, a BA from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1987 and La Universidad de Sevilla, Seville, Spain 1984 - 1985.  

 

I have doctoral level clinical training from Virginia Tech's Center for Family Services and from Ottawa Civic Hospital where I got advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy

 

I have publications in the area of Emotionally Focused Therapy, and have presented on various topics at conferences here and abroad.  My dissertation explored the new concept of attachment injuries in couples relationships. 

 

I also have additional training in Couples Communication, Couple Development, Process Experiential Psychotherapy, Relationship Enhancement, Sexual Addictions, and Solution-Focused Therapy. 

 

I am currently an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Tech's Marriage and Family Therapy in Falls Church.  I have taught Life-Span Development, Crisis Intervention, and have developed a course called Emotion and Family Therapy. 

 

Clinically I am developing a short program for couples to learn fundamental principles of healthy communication and sustained closeness.  I lead training groups in couples therapy and have a multi-cultural interest and work with clients from a variety of backgrounds.

 

I am a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
(AAMFT
